Sidney Nichols is a defender on the Whitworth women’s lacrosse team and serves as the senior team leader. We asked Sidney, a psychology major, what it’s like to be a student-athlete:
“During our season, things tend to get very busy. I typically will go to classes in the mornings and afternoons on weekdays, followed by practice in the evenings. I work as well, so that is typically what I do after practice. Our practices are held six days a week before we get into gameplay, and when we get into our games for the season, we are either traveling or competing at home on the weekends. This can seem like a lot, but to manage it, I plan out each of my days and keep a planner on hand.
“Someone who has made a personal impact on me during my time with Whitworth Athletics is Brittany Plunkett Castilla, our athletic trainer. I have spent a lot of time with Brittany throughout my years on the team, dealing with a lot of small injuries and now my recently torn ACL. Brittany has truly been a rock for me, not only in a physical sense but mentally as well… Brittany has been someone who has changed my experience for the better, and I know she always has my best interest at heart, as an athlete and as a person.
The most rewarding part of being a part of a team is knowing that you all have a common goal and working toward that together. Being in times of hardship, frustration and joy continuously brings the team together, and that is a beautiful thing to me. The bonds between teammates grow through every aspect of the season, and that is what is truly rewarding.”
