Whitworth University welcomed our third cohorts of Doctor of Physical Therapy and Doctor of Occupational Therapy students to campus this week. The Doctor of Physical Therapy program kicked off the year with a tea to launch the Rockin’ Mentors program, through which new DPT students will be mentored by residents from the independent living side of the Rockwood at Whitworth retirement community. The residents will serve as specialists in living independently as older adults and model communication skills and professionalism for the incoming cohort.
Carrie Clark Hawkins, DPT program director and associate professor, says, “We hope that this shows our students how capable people are as they age (medical professionals routinely underestimate what people can do as they get older), as well as provide the mentors with an opportunity to provide a service and receive assessments that we hope will extend their time in the independent living side of Rockwood.”
