Engineering alumna now working on Whitworth’s new engineering building

One of the engineers working on our new PACCAR Engineering Building is none other than recent Whitworth engineering graduate Ashtyn Petersen ’23! Now a civil engineer for Coffman Engineers in Spokane, Petersen delighted her former professors when she attended the celebration of construction for the building earlier this month as her company’s representative.

Petersen is involved in a range of projects at Coffman, from recreational and municipal developments to battery energy storage systems to stormwater management.

Petersen shares what it’s been like to work on this project for her alma mater:

“I joined the [PACCAR Engineering Building] team in the latter stages of the design process, contributing stormwater drainage and pipe calculations, preparing the drainage report, and refining final details before the project was submitted for permit. Since construction began, I’ve been involved in construction administration and making regular monthly visits to the site.

“It’s particularly rewarding to work on a project that feels so personal. I have relationships with the engineering professors who will use this new facility, and they have long needed an upgraded space to support their programs. It’s incredibly fulfilling to have a hand in shaping the future of the next generation of engineers.

“I’m thankful to Coffman for providing me with this full-circle opportunity. It has been an enriching experience, and I’m eager to see the PACCAR Engineering Building come to life.”

This is such a great story! It really highlights the strength of the Whitworth engineering program. Not only is it preparing talented graduates like Ashtyn for successful careers, but it’s also fostering a sense of loyalty and dedication to the university.

It’s fantastic that Ashtyn is having such a meaningful experience contributing to a building that will directly benefit her former professors and future Whitworth engineers. Her comments about it being “particularly rewarding” and “shaping the future” really resonate. What a testament to Coffman Engineers for providing opportunities like this for recent grads!

The PACCAR Engineering Building sounds like it’s going to be a real game changer for the department. As a prospective (or current) student reading this, it definitely makes Whitworth’s engineering program even more appealing. Looking forward to seeing updates on the building’s progress!

It’s so inspiring to see Whitworth engineering graduates giving back to the program! Hearing about an alumna working on the new building creates such a strong connection for current and future students. What specifically about her experience at Whitworth do you think led her to that current project?
