Faculty Q&A: Josh King, School of Business

Meet Josh King MBA ’24, a lecturer in the Whitworth School of Business and recent graduate of Whitworth’s MBA program. He teaches courses like Marketing Strategy in the MBA program and Thinking Like a Leader at the undergraduate level.

Q. What drew you to your academic discipline?
A. I’ve always been passionate about helping others. For the past 12 years, I’ve owned and operated my own business, Tinderbox Marketing. To grow my business, I’ve led workshops and presentations throughout the region, and I always found it energizing and rewarding. Fast forward, and I now have my MBA and have been teaching at Whitworth for almost three years.

Q. Tell us about a fun class you teach.
A. I love the class Thinking Like a Leader. In that class, students learn critical thinking and leadership skills in a conversational and activity-based environment. One of the activities requires that students role-play “laying off” their peers by sitting at the front the class and addressing the entire room. It sounds intimidating and heartbreaking, but students end up appreciating the experience.

Q. What’s something great about the Whitworth School of Business?
A. The faculty and staff are all amazing humans. I’m truly shocked I get to work with them! As for the students, they are some of the brightest and best young people I know.

JUST FOR FUN…

Q. What might your students be surprised to learn about you?
A. I’m fairly outdoorsy. I like to snowboard, mountain bike and hike.

Q. What’s the most interesting or unusual item in your office?
A. There are a few, from my grandfather’s German steins to paintings done by my great-aunt. But the one I’m most proud of is the Founder’s Award I received from the MBA program.

Q. What artists or musical genre do you play when you need a pick-me-up?
A. When I need a pick-me-up, it’s pop-punk, without a doubt.
