Meet Assistant Professor of Music Jared Hall ’08, DMA, who returned to his alma mater to join the faculty in 2022. In addition to directing the renowned Whitworth Jazz Ensemble, Hall teaches courses such as Contemporary Jazz Methods and Brass Techniques.
Q. What drew you to your academic discipline?
A. I found myself practicing the trumpet in my spare time more than anything else through high school and at Whitworth. Over time, I developed a deep passion for music. I’ve always enjoyed learning, performing, practicing (improving), composing and teaching. Making it my life’s work is a blessing.
Q. What advice would you give to a student who’s interested in studying music at Whitworth?
A. Devote yourself to the practice and development of your craft. Be humble – there’s always someone better than you on the instrument, more experienced, or who knows something that you don’t. They can help you in your journey!
JUST FOR FUN…
Q. What might your students be surprised to learn about you?
A. I have a 6-year-old son named Ezra who loves the piano, baseball, swimming, Sunday school and Kirby.
Q. What’s your go-to podcast?
A. “Building Relationships” with Dr. Gary Chapman and “The John Delony Show.”
Q. What artists or musical genre do you play when you need a pick-me-up?
A. Earth, Wind & Fire. Linkin Park. Gorillaz. And lately Imagine Dragons (with my son).
