The greatest reward of Whitworth Athletics is the growth our student-athletes experience personally, athletically and as a team. When our student-athletes’ dedication and teamwork pay off in championship titles, though, it’s icing on the cake.
This past season, Coach Steve Schadt ’96 led the men’s and women’s swimming teams to a double gold as both teams claimed Northwest Conference championships. Over his 22 years as the program’s head coach, Schadt has led the men’s team to 18 NWC titles and women’s team to five titles. An alum of the Pirate swimming program himself, Schadt shares about coaching these incredible teams.
Q. Tell us about your favorite memory from this season.
A. My favorite memory from this season was watching my men’s and women’s teams come together as one team to win both of their respective conference team championship titles. For those four days, it felt like we were not a men’s team or women’s team. We were just one big, united team. Watching everybody get so excited and pull for each other was a lot of fun!
Q. How would you describe the current team?
A. I would describe my current team as very tight-knit. They are very much like a family. They work hard together and are always supporting one another both in and out of the pool.
Q. Why do you enjoy coaching at Whitworth?
A. This is my alma mater, and I have a lifetime of great memories here. Being able to pour into my swimmers every day and help them grow as people spiritually, socially, academically and athletically is incredibly rewarding. I love my job and see it as a calling.
Q. What is it like to coach for the team you swam for as a student?
A. It is an honor to coach the team I swam for. It means so much to me, and this swim program has had a huge, positive impact on my life in so many ways. The previous head coach, Tom Dodd, was a mentor and father figure to me. He turned over an incredible program to me, and it’s been a delight to serve this team. I am very fortunate and thank God for the privilege.
