Faculty Q&A: Sharon Yurs, Physical Therapy

Meet Lecturer Sharon Yurs, PT, DPT, who teaches in Whitworth’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

Q. What drew you to your academic discipline?

A. My clinical career as a physical therapist has centered on pediatrics, and I’ve always loved the opportunity to connect with and educate children and their families – while also learning from them. Now, as an instructor in the DPT program, I’m grateful to share those clinical experiences with the next generation of physical therapists. Together, we continue to grow and discover new ways to have an impact on the lives of children and families.

Q. What are some of the courses you teach?

A. I have the pleasure of team teaching across a variety of courses in the DPT program, with a special focus on pediatric content. You’ll often find me involved in our Neurological Management series, Professional Formation courses, as well as Movement Systems and Movement Across the Lifespan. I like to say I get to teach all the fun material – and help students learn through play!

Q. Tell us about a fun class you teach.

A. One of the highlights of the Movement Across the Lifespan course is a series of lab sessions where the DPT students design and lead assessments and activities for children from the community. I always look forward to these labs – it’s a joy to witness the creativity of our students and the meaningful interactions that happen between the students, children and their families as they learn from each other!

JUST FOR FUN…

Q. What might your students be surprised to learn about you?

A. I cannot cross my eyes – believe me, I’ve tried!

Q. Tell us about your pets.

A. I share my home with two cats – Lester, a sweet Siamese, and Griswald, a vocal tabby – as well as Maisie, my golden retriever who’s convinced that everyone she meets is her new best friend.

Q. If you could spend a day as any fictional character, who would it be and why?

A. Hmm. I would have to choose Hermione Granger – because who wouldn’t want days filled with magic, a time turner, and a bag with the undetectable extension charm?!
