Congratulations to physics major Valerie Hanes ’27, who earned the Best Poster Award at this year’s Murdock College Science Research Conference! Hanes’ award-winning poster, titled “Modeling Cell Motion in Time-Dependent Electric Fields,” showcased her impressive summer research conducted under the mentorship of Whitworth Engineering & Physics Department faculty members John Larkin and Jonathan Dawson.
Hanes’ work contributes to a larger, three-year research project funded by the Murdock Charitable Trust and led by Dawson that aims to develop a deeper, mechanistic understanding of how biological cells move in response to external electric fields. This recognition highlights not only Hanes’ exceptional talent and dedication but also the cutting-edge research opportunities available to our students. At Whitworth, students can press into their curiosity through hands-on undergraduate research that bridges physics, engineering and biology.
