Warren Friedrichs is the winningest coach in Whitworth history. Across his legendary career leading men’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf to championship-winning seasons, he has learned what it takes to succeed. Here, this Whitworth emeritus professor of kinesiology, former coach and athletics director (1985-2017) shares his 10 keys to success.
- Dream big and work every day to make it happen.
- Surround yourself with good people.
- Think long term in your decision-making. You can get into trouble making decisions based on the short term.
- Teach your athletes to compete in the games and in practice. Help them learn why they win and why they don’t.
- If you have someone with special talent, don’t hold them back – let them do what they do best.
- Develop a standard routine for most practices and emphasize quality over quantity.
- Make the game as simple as possible; do a few things really well instead of being average in too many things.
- Talent usually wins, so choose a coaching position that has a fighting chance of success.
- Make your program special and a positive experience so others will want to be involved.
- Positive coaching works better than negative coaching. Reward positive behaviors as often as you correct negative ones.
