Jan Term 2026: First-Year Honors in Hawaii

Through a special Jan Term off-campus study program in Hawaii, first-year students are immersing themselves in the history, culture and traditions of the islands. Led by professors Stacy Keogh and Bert Emerson, the First-Year Honors Program in Hawaii brings together Cultural Anthropology in Hawaii and Honors Introduction to Cultural Studies for an unforgettable academic experience.

Based on O’ahu at Camp Mokule’ia – meaning “place of abundance” – students are engaging firsthand with the Hawaiian language as well as Hawaii’s farming practices, religious practices, food, landscape and stories. Throughout the program, students examine Hawaii as both a unique cultural place and as part of the United States. Each day offers opportunities to gain a deeper cultural understanding in one of the world’s most beautiful places.
