Jan Term 2026: Central American Field Ecology in Costa Rica

Whitworth’s biology department empowers students to turn curiosity into meaningful research, equipping them with the skills and perspective needed to understand and protect God’s creation. One of the department’s hallmark research opportunities is the biennial Central American Field Ecology course, led by Professor of Biology Grant Casady.

During Jan Term, biology and environmental science students performed research projects they designed on campus last fall at three sites in Costa Rica. The student teams focused their projects on:

  • Monitoring populations of mollusks on the Pacific coast and the effects of sustainable fishing practices on intertidal health
  • Comparing the use of artificial intelligence and sound recordings to field surveys of frog diversity in the rainforest
  • Comparing lichen cover as a function of tree harvest history in the cloud forest

Well done to all involved! Our students so beautifully represent Whitworth’s values of academic excellence and faithful stewardship of the natural world.
