Meet Assistant Professor of Biology Jenny Onley ’11, Ph.D., a Whitworth alumna who has returned to join the faculty! She teaches courses such as Medical Microbiology and Bacterial Pathogenesis.
Q. What drew you to your academic discipline?
A. When I was an undergraduate student at Whitworth University, my microbiology professor taught us about microorganisms that are important in transforming carbon, nitrogen and other nutrients in the environment. When I learned that microbes can break down waste and even help us clean up uranium spills, I knew I wanted to spend my career studying and applying microbiology to important human and environmental issues.
Q. Tell us about a fun class you teach.
A. I teach Medical Microbiology, where students learn about the bacteria, fungi and viruses that make us sick. In the lab, we learn many tests for identifying microbes, and then we use those skills to identify a mix of unknown bacteria (unknown to the student, that is!). It is fun to synthesize what we learn and apply it in a way that is analogous to what occurs in hospital labs with patient samples.
Q. What advice would you give to a student who’s interested in studying biology at Whitworth?
A. Be intentional about your future plans, but remain flexible as well. There are so many different directions that a degree in biology can take you (medicine, veterinary, research, teaching, clinical labs, etc.). It is OK to change your mind or to use your degree in nontraditional ways. God has a purpose for your life!
Q. What’s something great about the Whitworth Biology Department?
A. Our department has a diversity of subject specialties and teaching styles. But one unifying characteristic is that our professors and staff are supportive and understanding. Our courses may be challenging, but we are here to walk alongside you on your educational journey.
JUST FOR FUN…
Q. What might your students be surprised to learn about you?
A. I took a somewhat nontraditional path to my current position as a professor; I did research and development at a biotechnology company and research at a government lab before coming to Whitworth.
Q. What’s the most interesting or unusual item in your office?
A. A cross-stitched image of microbes, made by my husband.
Q. What’s your favorite spot on campus?
A. The garden behind Johnston Science Center, because it has my favorite tree – a weeping cherry blossom tree!
Q. Tell us about your pet.
A. I have a grouchy cat named Jack.
Q. What’s your go-to podcast?
A. Right now, I am listening to “Tea for Teaching” by John Kane and Rebecca Mushtare.
Q. What artists or musical genre do you play when you need a pick-me-up?
A. Stevie Wonder.
Q. If you could spend a day as any fictional character, who would it be and why?
A. Doctor Strange. When I study in the library, I become a better scientist and professor. When Doctor Strange studies in the library, he gains superpowers!
